Hot Travel Trend: Ecuador Emerging as a Popular American Vacation Destination:)

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa., Aug 30, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Interested in getting a sneak peek at what travel destination will be big in 2012 -- look no further than South America, particularly Ecuador. Gate 1 Travel, a leader in independent and escorted travel has seen a 95% increase in year-over-year bookings for the South American destination. Travel is expected to increase as more availability opens.

"There are numerous reasons why Ecuador vacations have increased in popularity among American tourists, but one of the most important reasons is cost," said Marty Seslow, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Gate 1 Travel. "Ecuador is currently very affordable, with flight and hotel accommodations averaging under $1500 per person for our eight day escorted tour. Additionally, Ecuador uses the US dollar as its currency, taking away the worry and the hassle of getting different currency and figuring out exchange rates."

  2. Great destination! It already was a quite popular destination among Dutch tourists. Been there twice myself. Besides a jungle adventure (Amazon; eastern part of the country), mountainbiking near Banos or a trip on the roof of a train to Devil's Nose, the number one highlight is a trip to the Galapagos Islands. And if like climbing/mountaineering, like I do, there are great volcanous to climb!

If you include the Galapagos Islands, you will definitely need more than 8 days to see all the highlights!

I was there , maybe , five years ago. It was similar in safety to Central America. You might get robbed, but not injured. Keep an eye on your bags! Use some commen sence when walking about in the cities. I was travelling on my own by bus. If you are in a tour group or staying at more high end accomidations, it would be much safer. I had no trouble at all and would definitely go back sometime.

One scam that used to prevail involved a guy selling cheap souvenirs on the beach. He would mention all the great deals he has and asked if you would like to come with him to see his stuff. He would take you to a remote area near the beach where his friends were waiting to rob you.
In general if you have street smarts you should have no problems.
