The air conditioning outage at HNL's overseas terminal is going into its third day. The overseas terminal houses (among other functions) the immigration and customs processing areas, which, because of its sealed perimeter, is reported to be very warm. Since gate areas in the overseas terminal are also enclosed, those waiting for flights to depart may wish to go to the secured courtyards on the ground level to find some fresh air.

The Inter-Island Terminal is not affected by the outage.

On a similar note, it is embarrassing to report that the streets around the airport have been without nighttime lighting since last November, due to a "failed transformer". If you arrive in the evening and you are renting a car, please exercise extreme caution when exiting the airport. You may wish to get on the H-1 freeway as soon as possible instead of taking a very dark Nimitz Highway.

    UPDATE as of Friday, 8/26/11:

Half of the overseas terminal now has A/C. The international arrivals area, including immigration and customs, will not be repaired for four or five more days. No estimate on when street lighting around the airport will be repaired.

I witnessed two cars near the airport make left turns onto the wrong side of the median the other night. It was so dark at the intersection they apparently could not see where to turn and became 'wrong way drivers'. Please be careful!
