So out of curiosity I looked to see how many miles it would cost me to fly Hong Kong-Bangkok in Emirates 1st with skyrwards miles. My though is that this might be the easiest way to check off a bucket list item of flying an Emirates a380 first class.

Per the miles calculator on Emirates' website, it says one way miles award resumptions are no bookable. Only 60,000 skywards miles for roundtrip.

But then why I try to make a dummy award booking, it shows me that I can fly EK 385 on July 24th 2014 for 37,500 skywards miles and $46.55 in taxes and fuel surcharges.

So is this actually possible? Or will it eventually not let me do this? I cant go further because I am new to the program and don't have any miles.

Oneway awards are available using skywards miles, but only at the more expensive flex reward rates (saver rewards must be return).

The ticket's $806 USD one-way (plenty of advance availability, I picked a random date, 10/11). Unless you're going to be generating EK miles VERY cheaply, it's probably better to pay cash for this. (EK is an SPG transfer partner, but I'm not sure I'd blow 30K+ SPG for an $800 plane ticket).

True. But you figure getting $800 worth of the SPG sign up bonus isn't that bad of deal either.

Ah I see. Hence why it is 37500 miles and not half of the rerun amount 30000. Makes sense.

So I would assume the best way to check for availability is through Emirates' site correct?

In terms of airfare? Eh. You could turn that into a lot of SE Asian flying in C on US using their SE/Central Asia award, and that region is pretty big (includes India). If you did it to BA and then cashed in for CX F... CX F is 22.5K Avios on that route. But no shower, I guess. ;)

But it's your deal, get what you want. In the end, what you value is what you value. It's your bucket list.
