It's almost a cliche - world travelers go anywhere and explore any place, except their own back yard. We all need to take a few hours now and then to view our hometown with fresh eyes. Seek a "kettle moment"; leave your jaded experience behind look at your locale with awe and surprise, like you're seeing it for the first time. Walk around the town square, stop by the diner, explore an alley, and always remember to look up.

Elgin looks beautiful. Do you know if there are any Frank Lloyd Wright buildings there?

I don't believe so. Lots of Victorians, a bit of art deco in the downtown area, and a riverboat casino. The town was pretty run down for a few decades; the casino provided funding for riverfront development, and that area is quite nice now. Some neighborhoods are still pretty rough.

Elgin was home to the largest watch making activity in the U.S. one hundred years ago (Elgin pocket watches), but that is long gone; now it's home to the Elgin Street Sweeper company. They make the big machines that drive down city streets scrubbing the pavement.

The old and new buildings in downtown St.Charles maintain an early 20th century character, but with a few modern touches.

I think I've driven by there a few years ago, but it was population 4. In the group of buildings off of the road, one had a sign that said "BAR." I wondered how many glasses they had.

There is not much in Ellis, Kansas. This building shows the German heritage of the area.

Batavia, Illinois, on the Fox River, about an hour west of Chicago. It is just a bit south of Elgin and St. Charles, which appear earlier in this thread. The riverfront in Batavia has been developed into a number of parks with walking and biking paths.

  19. is Union City anywhere near Saginaw, I was an exchange student and graduated high school there in '84, loved Michigan, although the winter was a bit tough on me as I'd arrived from Australia and the climatic differences were substantial. Great scenery, and very friendly people.

An old barn just of the town square of Bishop Hill. It's pretty similar to LarryInNYC's town square above, don't you think?

    Bishop-hill-barn.jpg

This is a kiln behind an art center on the corner of the town square.

    Bishop-hill-kiln.jpg

And another kiln, this one a giant head, the fire is built in the mouth.

These are in a little garden behind an antique shop in the center of Bishop Hill, IL, right next to a small chicken coop.
