I'm looking at taking an award trip in business class to Tokyo and have the choice between a 777-300 into NRT at about 4pm or a 777-200 in HND at 5am. Both flights leave from the west coast. I'm going on vacation and want to see Tokyo for a few days. A hotel night costs 40k priority club points ($240) and I have enough vacation to take an extra day if needed.

    What would you pick?

Does the 77W have the new C seats? If so, I would go with that.

LAX-NRT and SFO-NRT both have the staggered seats while LAX-HND has the old C seats

I would pick the Narita flight. Since it arrives at 4pm, you can ride the Narita Express (1 hour) into the city, check in to your hotel immediately, have a nice dinner and get a good night's sleep... ready to tackle Tokyo the next day refreshed and energized and a little closer to being in sync with Japan time.

I don't know about you, but arriving at 5am-- even though closer to the city, leaves me a little blurry-eyed. Depending on where you stay, you may or may not be able to check in to your hotel until a room is ready. That first day in Tokyo might be something of a stretch without a little rest, a shower and the time zone difference.

One alternative might be to take the local train from Narita airport into Narita town (15 min.) check in to a comfortable hotel like the Richmond, walk around Narita town for a while (a charming place!) and have a decent dinner at one of many restaurants in the vicinity. The next morning you can catch the Narita Express into the city. If the time change makes you an early riser, walk down to Narita-san Buddhist temple before breakfast...it's one of the largest in Japan and is quite fascinating.

Sad to say I would pick Narita........but I do like that flight to HND (not the seats though). HND is so much easier and closer to the city!

I just hate the HND flight time though. I like arriving in the evening not early morning. Easier for me to avoid jetlag as I usually can't sleep on the plane. Last time I flew LAX-HKG on CX, the flight arrived at around 6am and my schedule was screwed up for a week!

The idea of HND flights is to sleep through and wake up in time for a pre-landing breakfast and get into town to work/play etc.

But those old C seats are a pain to sleep. The new staggered product is a lot easier to sleep.

Is anyone finding NH F ? It seems like these are never available from the west coast, though I have heard of FFers finding availability out of ORD? Any tricks?

I took the HND-LAX flight a couple weeks ago on the 772 in business. Not really a fan of that config at all if you can avoid it. The service was fine and the meal included the best steak I've ever had on a plane. But the seats are rather meh.

Good availability from the east coast this summer. I also just grabbed a seat in February JFK-NRT

Lucky you! I wanted to do that route too but indeed I did ORD-ICN on OZ outbound then NRT-ORD inbound to try both carriers out. Keep fingers cross hopefully they will keep the new aircraft for these routes.

    Another data point, fwiw:

For the past few months, I've placed search alerts for one F award on NH to NRT from every US gateway for May 16 & a few on May15. (Thanks WATT!)

Late last week for the first time I saw an award F seat open up. That was SFO-NRT on May 15.

Then F space opened up ex-LAX for May 16.

Both spaces seemed to be available to book for a few days over the weekend. Sadly, there was only one nonstop ex-JFK/EWR with either C/F award space, both at 6am which did not work for me.

Earlier this week, @1am Tues morning, I happened to check UA.com & saw a single F award opened ex-JFK on NH1009.

By the time I reached UA & told the 1K agent what flight I wanted, the space was already gone. :(

Then yesterday, the @3am alert showed F space opened up again on JFK-NRT NH1009 for May 16.

I saw the alert a few hours later, called UA and booked it.

btw, I was also on the lookout for OZ F just on ORD-ICN but never saw any open space.

Glad to hear you got the seats (and that the alerts worked).
