Hi everyone! Hipmunk has just released a feature that lets you use a basic, ITA-like route language to search for flights. Unlike ITA's Matrix, we also give you a way to book your flights! Just type two colons after your departure city, and then you can specify route airlines or cities.
    A few examples:

Note that this feature is in beta; we don't currently support fare/alliance specifications, and the feature relies on our ability to get good data from our partner airlines. There may be certain routes or airlines where it's not a particularly smooth process; please let us know and we'll do our best to fix them!

Cool! Do you mean SAN instead of SFO in your quote above?
Can you tell us the advantages of using Hipmunk over having ITA doing the heavy lifting?

I certainly do; thanks for the catch!

The biggest advantage: we only show a result if we actually have a way to book it! You won't have to try to painstakingly re-construct an itinerary with a travel agent or website. In addition, we can integrate with your calendar so you can see flights that fit into your schedule.

    Cool feature! Thanks!

Now, all I need is more than 3 legs for a multi-city option and I am good to go ;)

I did a quick r/t search JFK::AA+ to HKG::AA+ with the fixed dates , and it was amazingly fast! Faster than ITA or AA.com. Where do guys pull the data from? Any known GDS or some proprietary data source?

Never mind, I think I just found out. It seems that you are using ITA’s QPX.

This is really cool. Love that the guide/options appear as I type.

Could you add multiple booking options? E.g., if I find the route on Cathay Pacific, I can book on either Orbitz or CA itself?

Thanks for your feedback, everyone. :)

    We're working on it!

Thanks. Did you know you they can even store searches that cover more than one day? Use the + and - buttons on the frontpage and take a look at the URLs to see what I mean.

We're working on many more direct-to-airline links. Some airlines have better websites than others, as I'm sure you know, so sometimes this can take some time. :)

Unfortunately not; older browsers without Chrome Frame can't handle all our fancy graphics very well. Do you have any other browsers you can use, like Firefox?

Yup! Can't wait till they enable autocomplete search with booking codes / fares like ITA's "/f AA..oxl-" and such.

There should be versions of Firefox that run from a USB drive. Such as http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

Just tried this out. I really like the interface and the way they show you the options available when entering the information. As I pointed out to the online rep, I think they should give you the option to choose a site to purchase from. For example, right now I'm booking flights through AMEX due to the double points promo they have going. I get 3X MR with my Premier Gold and an additional MR point for booking through them. I lieu of that I would at least like the option to purchase direct from the airline website (not crazy about Orbitz/Expedia)

    Overall though, an excellent start.

    hipmunk:

When I try set # of nights on the "Price Graph" tab to zero, I get - "that trip length is too small". Is that intentional? It works fine on ITA whenever I try to look up the same-day trips.

Would be cool if you can add fare class functionality like ITA.. but that might be asking for a lot. ;)

    Awesome update!

As far as the iPad app is concerned, we can't do the advanced searches/route language support like we can through the regular site correct?

Thanks for the suggestions! We're constantly trying to add new ways to book flights. We already have direct booking arrangements with dozens of airlines (domestic and international) and are working on even more.

    Looking into this. :)

    On the to-do list!

Not right now, but give it time. You should be able to do it on our Android app, however.

I have minor request. Would it be possible to add distance information for each leg when you click on flight options? It'd be nice to have a quick glimpse as to the miles involved without going to a mileage calculator? Maybe you guys can put in a "distance" tab in the sort fields you already have

    Thanks!
