While looking for, er, low fares, I came across this:
BZV-FIH. 16 miles in coach (H fare) for US$873 and a bargain $54.56 per mile.

    Can anyone beat that?

It as all in, and even includes a meal(!) according to matrix. But I think it might just be anomaly with matrix as I couldn't see the flight on kenya airways' site. Oh well...

   !!

BZV, the Capital of Congo Republic, and FIH, the Capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, are separated by just a large river. It would be more economical to just swim across! :D

Just out of curiosity, what is the operating airline? I bet you the price is so high because everyone along the ticket chain must have their "cut" in order to make the ticket happen:mad:

    $873 for a 25 min flight...

This could be a market where Ethiopian Airlines (now a *A member), with its great "first-world" organization, could do very well by offering cheaper, more efficient service.

Interesting...expertflyer does not show any availability, but matrix does. If there's availability you could always book a round trip and throw away the return segment to save a few bucks while staying on KQ. Also, EO has some more reasonable one-way fares, dunno if they're bookable.

  9. Haha. I just looked it up for a flight in April and the cheapest flight I could find was US$938.44 R/T. It's a 30 minute flight. As NYCUA1K mentioned, it really is just a river separating the two cities (the only two capital cities in the world that actually look across at each other). The cheapest was Kenya Airways.

I reckon with the corruption, rioting and overall dangerous situation over there, it might actually be cheaper to fly :p

Well, as a Delta Gold, I'd get 500 MQMs and 1000 RDMs for this flight. For $873, that's $1.75/MQM and 87 cpm (NOT .87 cpm ;))

And I thought the $500 r/t (a cheap fare for this route apparently) I was forced to pay for the 75 mile trip from AMM-TLV had to be the most expensive air mile in the world!

Back just before the end of airline regulation in the USA, TWA flew SFO-OAK in order to claim direct service to OAK. It was a ten minute flight, probably about ten miles across the San Francisco Bay. I wish I could remember roughly what the stand alone fares were. In current dollars, this would be expensive if one were able to buy just this segment.

Just for fun, I decided to look up how advance fares for AMM-TLV were faring these days.

The 500$ fare I purchased while traveling through the Middle East last year was an absolute steal!

SMK-WBB is an interesting trip. It's 7 miles and a direct trip at the weekend costs $70 one-way. $10/mile is bad enough, but if you need to make the trip on a week day it costs from $570 with 5 stops to $796 with three stops :)

That's a bit odd. If you price up one-way fares for each direction you can get the total fare for about $500-600.

Edit: acutally it's even odder than that. If you ask matrix for a return fare, it doesn't give you any direct flights. If you ask for a return fare AMM::F to TLV::F (i.e. a single flight only), you correctly get the lowest fare.

Woah. That is interesting, effseeoh. Same search in Hipmunk also brings up the <$600 fares. Oh well, in any case. Probably one (major?) route that will easily and consistently make the top 10 list for highest cost per (air) mile.

NCE-MCM (Monaco Heliport) $198, 11 miles, $18/mile. Well, I can sort of understand that one :)

That's a helicopter, not a plane, so it doesn't count. Besides, it's cheaper than I thought. I would have guessed closer to $500. I wonder how much the hydrofoil from NCE to Monaco costs.
