Electric cars are on roads across the U.S. now, but not everyone is ready to trade the gas pump for the plug just yet. A Gallup / USA Today poll found six in ten Americans would not buy one, despite the high cost of gas.
Now, Hertz is giving drivers the chance to cruise on electricity, without the commitment - by adding EV's to its fleet.
Here's how it works: Customers sign up for the Hertz Connect program. It's a car-sharing service which operates like ZipCar. There is no fee to join, then members are issued their own rental card.

They you go to the site either on line or through an app, find their location, and reserve a car.

New York, London -- and now Washington DC have added electric cars to their fleet.
"So this is the future of transportation," says Jack Hidary, Global EV Leader for Hertz.
Choices include the new Smart EV - the Chevy Volt, and the Nissan Leaf. Convenience is a big selling point.
