As some of you may know from my participation on FlyerTalk, my curiosity causes me to explore new or revised software — and the Internet bulletin board software that powers insideflyer.com is no exception.

By launching this thread, I am attempting to provide a consolidated resource with useful information on how to best enhance the milepoint.com experience, especially as it is new to everyone at the time this is posted. The reason for launching this thread is to make life easier for the information technology and administrative staff at milepoint.com, as well as for everybody who uses milepoint.com.

This thread is to be used as a service to all insideflyer.com members who not only have questions to be answered by fellow insideflyer.com members about how best to use the bulletin board software that powers insideflyer.com, but also as a place for members of milepoint.com to share their favorite methods of customizing and using insideflyer.com to help enhance the experience of other members.

Please remember that not every suggestion is right for everyone. Hopefully, however, this thread will serve to be very useful to virtually every member of milepoint.com.

Please post your helpful hints, tips, tricks and suggestions in this thread.

    Thank you in advance!

    -----------------

    I will begin:

Under the Alerts tab at the top-right corner of insideflyer.com will appear the alerts to the threads, “likes” and “follows” to which you want to watch. Did you know that if you place your cursor over the area which displays how many minutes ago the latest content, “like” or “follow” was posted or initiated that the exact date and time will appear in a small “hoverbox”?

Also, a small yellow starburst will appear for the most recent activity, although I have yet to figure out when that yellow starburst expires and thus disappears...

    Which Members are Currently On-Line?

A number of milepoint.com members have asked how to find out which milepoint.com members are currently on-line.

Here is one way on how to find out:
    • Near the bottom-right corner or top-right corner of the milepoint.com browser window is a lone icon with an arrow pointing in the Northeast direction. That is the Open Quick Navigation button. Click on it.
    • Under the General Links column that appears in the window that pops up, click on Recent Activity.
    • On the right side is a list of milepoint.com members currently on-line, amongst other information.
This is only one useful feature one will find with the Open Quick Navigation button...

The Navigation provides a quicker way to get around the site between forums, and reduce your clicking time to reach the various areas.
Is the starburst you reference an asterisk by the thread? I'm not seeing anything yellow and don't recall the yellow.

The asterisk which does appear to the left of the thread title can be clicked to bring you to the last unread post in a thread. It should go away once the thread has been read. There is also a "mark forums read" option at the top menu bar that will reset your login and mark everything up to that point in time as read.

Another item to highlight is the little down arrow next to the subforum counter when on the Forums page ... hovering over that button will display all the subforum names, and you can select one to go directly there.

    Accessing Discussions Using Quotes

Rather than provide a link to a different thread where you want to reply to what a fellow milepoint.com member posted, one can provide the quote in any desired thread, such as in the example provided below:
If you want to go directly to that thread, simply click on the little arrow that is pointing straight up, located to the right of the milepoint.com member name at the top of the quote.

Stating something more obvious: if you like a thread, look for the "Watch Thread" link, above and to the right of the first post on any page. This replaces the Subscribe feature you are probably accustomed to, elsewhere.

    No.

When checking upon the latest alerts, the small yellow starburst, which to me does not look like an asterisk but asterisk I take for stating that, appears to the right of where it states how many minutes ago the alert occurred.
Obvious is absolutely fine and, in fact, encouraged!

There will be milepoint.com members who will not even realize what you posted, which will make the information you posted just as helpful as information that may not be so obvious. In fact, what may be obvious to you may not necessarily be obvious to someone else.

Perhaps one day the information posted to this thread could be better organized but, for now, I encourage everyone to please post something in this thread that is expressly intended to enhance the milepoint.com user experience for all.

In the thread list, you'll notice a little blue dot next to the thread subject. Click that and it takes you to the first unread post in that thread. If you've already read the latest post in that thread, there will not be a blue dot.

    Working With Text Colors

Did you know that you can color your text with a custom color instead of a pre-set palette of colors?

When composing your content before you post it, select the text to which you would like to apply a different color.

Then, simply click on the little triangle to the right of the A icon and click on More Colors at the bottom of the palette.

You can then choose from a range of thousands of colors from either the Color Picker, Palette or Named Colors.

In the Named Colors area, choose from such chic colors as Peru, Teal or Orchid.

Use the north pointing arrow located on the bottom left (tool bar) to instantly go to the top of page.

    Formatting Text Content

The default for adding text to the content one intends to post on milepoint.com is Rich Text Format. If, however, one prefers to edit in BB Code Editor format to format the content using HTML-style code, click on the icon at the top-right corner of the area where text is added that looks like a large letter A with an underline and a small letter A. The area where text is input will now be colored with a yellow gradation and the text will now appear smaller but bolder.

If, however, one wants to return to using the Rich Text Editor, simply click on Use Rich Text Editor that appears on the bottom-left corner of the area where text is added.

I mentioned Reddit.com community in another posting but neglected to highlight the fact that the contributors in that wildly successful community earn "karma points" and awards for their involvement. Here is a page explaining some of the awards: http://www.reddit.com/help/awards Bottom line, Reddit uses some unique tools to develop community cohesiveness.

Their icons are simply ugly, in my opinion.

If called upon, I would consider designing icons for milepoint.com...

Yeah, icons are ugly but the point I'm trying to express is that they are very successful at community development, loyalty and cohesion. They also offer a gold level of service for a fee which provides added conveniences.

And the fabulous thing about this is that you can receive emails each time it is replied to instead of just once since you signed in last.

Just realized you can use ctrl shortcuts to make inputting text faster (e.g., ctrl+b for bold, ctrl+u for underline)

    Discussion Participation

With the milepoint.com default settings, when you participate in a discussion, you will receive alerts when someone else either posts in that discussion, “likes” what you posted, or quotes your content...

..but if you were to look at a discussion that was not launched by you amongst the list of discussions when viewing a particular forum, how do you know whether or not you have actually participated in it?

You will see the avatar of the milepoint.com member who launched the discussion. If you see a smaller version of your avatar embedded in the lower-right corner of the avatar of the milepoint.com member who launched the discussion, that instantly informs you that you did indeed participate in that discussion.

    Alerts

You will only be alerted of new content in a discussion you are watching if you have already viewed the content of the discussion up until that point, or at least fooled the software that powers milepoint.com to “think” you have already viewed it.

When responding to an alert, you will see the sentence There may be more posts after this. The reason is that you are not bogged down with alerts every time milepoint.com members post to that watched thread until you get a chance to view it.

The more often a watched discussion is viewed by you, the more alerts you will receive whenever there is new activity in that discussion.
