    Good Morning,

I have friends taking a cruise from SYD to SFO next spring. They are looking to fly out of EWR (JFK could work, but not nearly as convenient) on April 10 in order to arrive in SYD on April 12. I am not sure the exact time/date for their departure on the cruise.

I've searched on the matrix ITA software and found fares from $1,162 on Ethiad (JFK) up and then to the mid $1,000's or higher on other carriers.
They will be flying in Economy and most of their past miles earnings have been with CO or DL...mostly CO.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I know booking a one way ticket can be costly, but wanted to give them the best options based on flights/availability/timing/seating.

    Thanks!
    robin :)

Have they examined the possibility of using miles for the flight?

They do not have near enough miles - they only fly 1-2x per year, mostly on AirTran from EWR to ATL.

Yikes, would they be opposed to say signing up for 2x citi aa cards each to get 100k miles to try and use towards that or are they pretty set on paying for the ticket?

The la or dfw routings are the shortest...if sitting in y, that may be a factor to consider.

About $1k for a one way a day or two after Easter strikes me as not a bad price.

I'd encourage them to arrive a day early. If there's a mechanical problem, flights to Oz can be delayed significantly or cxl'd outright. Don't want to miss the cruise over that!

I think it's about 3 weeks. They are retired, so they have the time. :)

It may be beneficial to think of it in two steps: NYC-LAX can often be had for $200. Then LAX-SYD is $586 on April 7.
