I'm trying to help my roommate plan a special trip for himself and his girlfriend to Japan. The best deals I've found so far are...not that great, $800 RT or so. I haven't come across any good regular fares, or trick fares.

    Departure range: April 18 - April 26
    Length of stay: 14-17 days

They're willing to put up with extra connections, and can leave from SFO/SJC/OAK/etc and land in NRT/HND, etc. Zero airline preference.

Any help finding a better deal for this trip would be greatly appreciated!

    Look at transiting HNL.

    1. Look at flights to HND rather than NRT.

    2. Consider DL through PDX or SEA to NRT (or LAX to HND).

Transiting HNL is $1K+. Transiting PDX/SEA on DL is similar.

LAX-HND is slightly cheaper than SFO, but breaks even considering getting to LAX.

I've been trying various routing combinations on ITA and still can't find a fare below $800. :-/

I suggest you buy your tickets pretty soon. $800 is relatively low for a ticket to NRT.

Their travel dates are likely to fall within the very popular tourist Sakura (cherry blossoms) season.

I think 800+ for a US-NRT fare is pretty good actually as it is a long flight. Might want to grab the tickets fast.

$800 to Tokyo is a steal this time of the year and that route regularly dips into the low 1,000s. :-:
