I'm trying to book for my girlfriend NYC-SEL-SGN-NYC.

I have really limited knowledge of travel hacking but I catch on quickly and would rather learn to fish than be spoon fed. If you can help me book this trip better (via PM or whatnot) I'd greatly appreciated.

Below is the best I could come up with in terms of the itinerary of the trip which is:
    • Leave on or after May 12th
    • Stay in Seoul for approx 7 days or so
    • Stay in HCMC for approx 14 days or so
Fare 1: Carrier OZ EKXEEOZ NYC to SGN
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code E
    Covers JFK-ICN (Coach), ICN-SGN (Coach)
    $625.00

Fare 2: Carrier OZ HKXEEOZ SGN to NYC
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code E, H
    Covers SGN-ICN (Coach), ICN-JFK (Coach)
    $811.00
    OZ YQ surcharge (YQ) $220.00
    OZ YQ surcharge (YQ) $3.60
US International Departure Tax (US) $16.30
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) $2.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) $4.50
Rep. of Korea Intl. PSC, Dep. Tax and Contribution to Intl. Poverty Eradication (BP) $33.80
    USDA APHIS Fee (XA) $5.00
    US Immigration Fee (XY) $7.00
    US Customs Fee (YC) $5.50
US International Arrival Tax (US) $16.30
Vietnamese Passenger Service Charge (International) (JC) $18.00

    Subtotal per passenger $1,768.50
    Number of passengers x2

    Total airfare & taxes $3,537.00

I don't know, most of us are after miles, airline/hotel status and things like that. Finding the cheapest fare from point A to point B doesn't involve any hack. I looked at Kayak, just like you.

What programs do you belong to? Do you hope to achieve EQMs for your flights? Looking for ways to upgrade (that trip will be brutal in the back)? Use lounges? We can help you with options for those sorts of questions, but if it's just a cheap fare you are after, Kayak does nicely, most of the time.

    Thanks for your reply pjolalfa.

I was led to believe that most times a hack is necessary to reduce fuel surcharges to get the price down and hence a cheaper fare.

Ohhh, that! Well that's an art form. :)
Look for a thread here called "trick it". There is a steep learning curve on that. Also probably not worth $220 bucks to learn it in the scheme of things as you don't have many options at the 1,768 price level. Doesn't do much good on another airline's $3000 fare if it won't come close to the 1768 anyhow.
