MSNBC: Heathrow gives Olympics-sized baggage handling a test run

I'm dreading the fact I have to come into LHR on July 26th...

Oh, I'll be coming from a 2.5 day trip to Germany, so will not be laden with bags...it's immigration I'm worried about! :)

I seem to recall a tale of lost luggage being destroyed b/c they didn't care enough to attempt to find the owners. This was a few years ago that a warehouse full of stuff made the news. I certainly hope they do a better job with this increase in travelers and their bags. I don't think LHR could weather the bad publicity, again. (of course they are so full of themselves, they probably don't care. LOL!)

Still waiting to see how they manage immigration.

came through Heathrow on Tues. night. better than usual for the after 10PM arrival time. 4 immigration people working the queue, which was better than in january. baggage came quit quickly, too. (but of course being 1K, i don't always have to wait long.)

that said, i was amused by the set up they are working on, post border control (down the escalator, before baggage). it appears to be some sort of Olympic ticket queue with kiosks. while i realize that not ever person arriving at terminal 1 is there to collect event tickets, i have to wonder exactly how well this queuing up after having waited in line already at immigration will go. i understand why they are doing this, to make it easier for attendees, but i just cringe to think about the vast number of people coming in at any one time next month.

immigration aside, i would not be looking forward to train or tube travel during that time. it just doesn't seem like they are really prepared for this influx of people. OTOH, it could go surprisingly well. </optomistic> ;)
