Hawaiian Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to acquire 16 new A321NEO aircraft between 2017 and 2020 with rights to buy 9 more. The listed price for all 25 aircraft would be $2.8B.
It seems like our little baby airline is growing up. :)

Wonder if this means the beginning of the end for their widebodies across the pacific?

Why would it? (they keep adding to that fleet last I checked). I suspect it simply gives them access to smaller markets that don't justify a 330 and give them more flexibility for existing markets for greater frequencies.

As a stretched A320 with new engines it will be more like a 757. This indicates either adding some smaller markets as suggested by HaveMiles, keeping profitable but lower density routes or filling in a more robust schedule for some big markets. Since we are looking out to 2017 and beyond, I think HAs management is thinking about when their current leases end and about being the dominant Pacific basin carrier based in HNL.

HA also announced an increase of 20.4% in RPMs, 22% in ASMs and a load factor of 83.2% in 2012, up 1.1% over 2011.
