|| Happy Fifth Anniversary, Airline Baggage Fees! ||
There should be a fourth option. -- I have a credit card that gives me a checked bag for free.
Since I haven't such a CC, I haven't really thought about this, thanks for pointing this option out.
Happy Anniversay. I wonder what new fees we will be celebrating in the next five years.
Wow, it's only been 5 years for this fee? I thought the airlines had started earlier then that.
Personally, I've never had an issue with baggage fees. I rarely check bags. I have lifetime status with one airline and annual status with another, so when I do check bags there's no fee.
I don't actually believe that the airlines "reduced" the cost of travel for people who don't check bags when they started charging these fees. But, I do think that the incremental revenue they derive from such fees makes it less likely they charge me more for something else.
Thankfully F tickets via miles or cash still give essentially unlimited free bags. Otherwise status does the job, so it's not all bad.
Either way though the baggage fees aren't excessive and I don't really have a choice, so I'd just pay it if I had to. I do miss the day when everything was just bundled though. I'd much rather pay 5 bucks more every time, whether or not I check something in. It's just so much easier when you don't have to worry about extras.
I'm all for fees of every kind. Charge people for the services they use. I don't want to pay for handling of your bags if I don't have any. This is how airfares are kept low.
