    http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/05/groupe-aeroplan-becomes-aimia

Groupe Aeroplan, the global loyalty management company founded in Canada in the 1980s, officially changed its name to Aimia, executives announced from Toronto on Wednesday.

The re-branding encompasses all of the Montreal-based company’s products under one umbrella, including Aeroplan, Air Miles, Carlson Marketing, LMG and Nectar.

"As competitors try to position themselves to take advantage of the burgeoning international market for loyalty management services, we are already well positioned as the established experts. A single, explicit global brand clearly reaffirms this privileged position,” said Rupert Duchesne, president and chief executive.

I hadn't realized that Carlson companies were involved, although I know they were early pioneers in the loyalty program area.

    New name! vomit emoticon.jpg

Here is a snippet from that article - vomit emoticon.jpg

oops - here is the snippet -
'Aimia is inspired by the word “aim” and highlights the company’s focus on targeting the right consumers for businesses. The name alludes to pinpoint precision – a “sweet spot” where two aims cross over, the company said.'

    my response vomit emoticon.jpg :D

Wonder if the former Aeroplan, now Aimia, knows that Aimia already exists - the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association!

Caution: Aimia may cause drowsiness, constipation, higher blood pressure, migraines, loss of vision, decreased libido, increased instances of adition to orange juice and Esso service station snack items. Should symptoms perists consult a pyhsician who doesn't exhibit any of the above conditions and whom does not collect Aeroplan miles.

Yet another insipid rebranding. Anyone remember when the umbrella company that once owned Westin, UA and Hertz rebranded itself? Figure this one will last as long...

The root words are friend in French and goal in English, so different connotations for the two groups.

Thanks. BTW AE shares are trading down 16-cents to $11 a share, one of the few companies on the TSX that is down today, so guess some people are commenting by abandoning the company.

While I do hate the name, I recognize the need to rebrand the parent company given the expansion of its activities and its geographic spread. BTW only a portion of Carlson was bought by AE. That was the affinity marketing/research unit. AE did not buy or otherwise take over the unit that manages FF programs (or at least used to manage NW's program) and IIRC one of the big hotel programs.
