I was working on the phone to reroute a trip in October to Buenos Aires. In resetting everything, I put in for an upgrade from Z to ON using Miles and Money (UA flies a 3-class 767 from EWR to EZE). The agent said why don't I use a GPU instead. I said I didn't think that was allowed. She said they received notice on May 1 that Z fares are now eligible for GPU upgrades to FC. I said go for it and since there was ON availability, the confirmation went through. Anyone else heard about this yet? The website language has not changed.

That would be a much welcome change if it's true. I would love to be able to take advantage of that for an upcoming trip to Australia in Z. Somehow, I think the OP just got lucky and hopefully the upgrade will stick.

Maybe UA is adding Z to the list of eligible fares, since they added P fare, which will eventually be the new "Z" fare...

Z and the new P can only move up as an op-up. This happens all the time BTW.

If this is true does this also apply to SWU's used on Lufthansa? :D

I'd like to see further confirmation of this, but I gather it may be new policy as the UA reservation system will only allow an upgrade that is properly supported by either instruments or miles.

The call I got 2 weeks ago asking me how I intended to support my upgrade for a flight yesterday whch had cleared several weeks prior suggests that might not be 100% true

Anybody else can confirm this ? Finally a chance I would like. Unfortunately Z was taken away from LH though.

I Know they are looking at the upgrade policies, and are making big changes, the Z upgrade would be a great move. It's too complicated, too many different fees, a retarded fee payment policy.

Is this going to be the "Milanos" of the GPU upgrade policy ?

I got a paper SWU + 5K MR in exchange for AA eVIP and it allows for UG on LH Z.

Tried to do this today, and the supervisor said no-go, even though the CSR, reading her notes, thought it could be done. She was told by her supervisor that it was ineligible on P and Z fares. *shrug*.

Eh, wasn't that into it. She spent a good 20 minutes with the supervisor, as opposed to just blowing me off.

Knowing shares it probably can't be done anyway, if the minium requirements are not met

There are manual workarounds. They have to do that when you use a GPU on a PS flight, for example. SHARES still sees it as ineligible unless W-fare and above, but a supervisor at the MPSC can override.

    We are talking about Z->F

People who buy W or lower should sit in Coach. LOL

Same applies. The CSR said it was actually possible, but needed policy-confirmation from her boss. Which did not happen. To be fair, the CSR read to me the "rules" that were issued to her, and they sounded very confusing.

Only because I play by the rules and buy higher fares where needed. I would be pissed if someone utilized these backdoors.

I am :oops:ing because W is perfectly legal for International upgrades; it's S or lower that should sit in the back.

On pmUA, when I drew a barcolounger 772, I inquired about an op-up, the GA said it wouldn't be needed, but then agreed to upgrade my Z to F by withdrawing a SWU. I think it was totally her discretion and she was overriding the rule, but it actually makes sense for UA if it burns an instrument on a seat that would have gone out empty.
