I called united to get put on a upgrade waitlist for the domestic segments for my business class award to Amsterdam. One segment (AMS->FRA) is on Lufthansa. Agent said if I was put on upgrade list for my SAN->EWR or ORD->SAN and the upgrade cleared, there system would send a message to Lufthansa which could cause them to cancel my AMS->FRA segment. This didn't sound right to me. Agent said to keep on checkng back to see if 1st class space opens on the domestic segments. That seems like a pain. Any advice?

You should be able to waitlist on a United operated segment without issues. Hang up/call again.

I have found lately that when I use a GPU, most domestic flights are waitlisted and only the Int'l flight confirms, I think this might be because UA is trying to sell the First Class seats prior to departure.

Sent an email to Customer Care via United.com. I got a reply in less than 90 min. Now my domestic segments state "I class requested" when I view them on United.com.

Thank you for contacting United Airlines.

I am sorry for the difficulty you described as well as for any negative
    impression this may have created.

It is true that in some cases, when there is other airline space in the
record, certain modifications will send a cancellation message.
However, a waitlist request such as this one is not problem and so I
have added your names to the waitlist for both domestic segments.

Please know that it is never our intent to provide inaccurate
information to our passengers. In an effort to provide consistent
service to our passengers, we have a vast reference system available to
employees. Be assured that I have reported your concerns to the
appropriate members of our management team. I am confident that positive
steps will be taken to remind our employees of the importance of
providing precise information to our customers.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation and we look
forward to welcoming you on board again soon.
