Google+ To Suspend Users Using Pseudonyms (mashable.com)

Google+ has decided to ban the use of pseudonyms and nicknames in place of real names. In response to feedback though, users will not be immediately suspended for violating Google’s Common Names Policy.
    ...
That hasn’t stopped Google from deciding to eliminate the use of pseudonyms on its social network. Google+ Product Manager Saurabh Sharma explained that the decision was made “to make connecting with people on the web more like connecting with people in the real world” on Google+.

Sharma also announced a change though — instead of immediately suspending accounts in violation of the policy, the company will be giving users a four day grace period to fix their profile names before they’re suspended.

So I will have to change my name from J. Smisek? That stinks, I have been very popular!

This is a horrible rule for the personal security of participants.

"If your profile is suspended, you will not be able to make full use of Google services that require an active profile such as Google+, Buzz, Reader and Picasa."

That could be pretty devastating to some Picasa users.

Same here...and good riddance. Perhaps some better understand how to get the value out of the tool than I do, but I found it fairly useless anyhow.

Ditto. I have a G+ profile, but haven't done much with it. Seems just like Facebook but with more circles.

Will they just randomly select accounts for audit? I don't use my real name but i have not been deleted yet

They'll use some sort of algorithm to flag suspicious accounts. With 25+ million users that's really the only option they have. And I don't think they have a way of verifying whether the name you use on G+ is your real name... it just needs to look like a real name. E.g., the name in my passport is Bob Smith... but my G+ account profile says I am John Miller -- how'd they know? Now, if I put "googlehater" as my G+ account name, they'd probably flag that as "not a real name" :D

Speaking of FB, I believe they have the same rule of requiring a "real" name.

Looking at Google's profile name rules, I love this one:

Don't use the name of another individual.
Impersonation is a serious issue. Pretending to be someone else could cause your profile to be deleted. If someone is pretending to be you, go to their profile and click Report this profile.

I'll now go and find all John Millers and claim they are impersonating me.

Agreed! I just don't get the point of what makes google+ better or more useful than Facebook.

Well, my friends are an interesting and fearless bunch.

On G+ 2 of 22 don't use their real name.
On FB 4 out of 118 are incognito.*
On MP and FT none of them use their real name.

*The results are skewed by one person who uses the same made-up name in all four of these places.

I am using my real name on FB because I only friend people who I know reasonably well in real life and am fairly passive. I don't like any company pages as a rule. On G+ I have two accounts; one with my real name and one with a real name.

I think this is a good thing. Google+ isn't like FB, its meant to be an extention of your real life relationships.

Why don't people want to use their real names?

FB has the same goal and restriction, no?

Why not use real names here on MP?

I think FBs intent may have been the same, but google had the "sum of the pieces" in place and now with google+, it's putting them all together. Your email address being your link to the world.

I cannot answer that question a MP rep would have to comment on.

While I have a few gmail addresses, none of them is my main address that my real world connections would use to reach me.

My comment was more along the lines of us having the option of using our real names here, and yet I don't see you doing that (me neither, of course).

Because this name is used with my blog and all social media content. Outside of this I use my real name for everything else.

    is a pseudonym. Who knew?
Soudohnim is a name I might have chosen if I'd thought of it and knew how to spell it. Ah, Sue Donim, am sure it's been done over and over.
