    Welcome to MP!!

The only way to upgrade using miles is if they are on a M fare class or higher and their must be upgrade seat inventory available. I can not remember what seat inventory is needed, but I am sure someone else will chime in. The big deal is the M fare class. How many miles do you have?

YBM fares only also must have upgrade space. ( Z class)

Assuming that the international trio has BE service, the upgrade inventory class is Z and the passengers must have a paid (revenue) ticket in fare class Y, B, or M. "Full" fare, generally Y, requires fewer miles. Most M TATL/TPAC fares are in the $3K to $4K range;.

If their ticket is fare class H, Q, K, L, U, or T, they might be able to pay the change fee (probably $400) and "fare up" to M. but don't even consider this unless Z upgrade inventory is available for the long segments.

    Thanks for the info.

If the tickets are purchased in upgradable fare class, how many miles will be needed to upgrade
    international flight ?

Does the Skymiles member contributing miles for the upgrade have to be flying? I believe this is the case with SWU's and am not sure if it applies to Skymiles upgrades or not...I'd be sure to double check!

I don't think so, but I've never tried it. You can certainly give an award ticket to someone when you're not traveling and mileage upgrades are considered awards (although you still earn miles according to the fare paid).

  9. I wouldn't necessarily use the phrase "...big deal..." to describe M fares!

No, the mileage owner doesn't have to be traveling.

FWIW, I've used SWUs without the owner traveling, without a problem. I know what the t&cs say, but my experience is that the agents don't care, and will process them anyway, at least if you do it over the phone.
