Frontier Airlines appears to be planning a third weekly flight from Columbia to Orlando, emails obtained from the city and the airline's booking system indicate.

Beginning the second week of April, Frontier Airlines lists three weekly flights from Columbia Regional Airport to Orlando International Airport. The additional flight would occur less than five months after the Denver-based carrier first began connecting Columbia to Orlando with twice-weekly flights.

"Frontier hasn't announced it formally, but it's on the Internet and you can go buy a ticket," said City Manager Mike Matthes.

Through an open records request, the Tribune obtained numerous emails from city accounts that detail Columbia's negotiations with various airlines. In the past 18 months, city officials have stepped up efforts to add more flights to the airport, resulting in an October announcement that American Airlines would begin flying from Columbia to Dallas and Chicago in February.

That agreement and the associated $3 million revenue guarantee for the airline also resulted in an announcement from Delta Airlines, which has been operating in Columbia since 2008, that it would stop connecting Columbia to Atlanta the day before American begins service.
