Frontier Airlines elite status members are getting used to its rewards program changing, but Wednesday morning's announcement trumps them all.

The Denver-based carrier is doing away with its two-tier system — the Ascent and Summit levels — and replacing it with a single "elite status," which splits the difference of what is required to receive program benefits.

Frontier in April unveiled its new ultra-low-cost carrier model, which involves streamlining its processes in order to cut costs the airline says it passes on in the form of lower base fares.

However Ascent and Summit members began weathering changes to the status program long before that.

Members received multiple e-mails from the airline throughout the last year, informing them that certain free, in-flight perks would be removed.
