Booked an A fare on UA, but one of the segments did not have availability in A. That segment ended up in B (economy bucket).

If A opens up, can I change to that without paying the $150.00 change fee?

Assuming you bought the A fare, yes, probably... but if the A fare has a change fee they might try and charge it. A polite but firm request and supe might override it.

If you were ticketed on a B fare though, UA will likely try to charge you whatever change fee the B fare has. Less likely that you can get that waived though.

I would hope they would not charge change fees to buy up to higher fare classes. CO doesn't charge if you buy up to a higher fare class as long as your itinerary doesn't change. I would hope UA would do the same thing.

I don't think the OP is trying to buy-up to a higher fare class. I think he purchased BUAUP fare where the fare auto books the customer in first class subject to "A" fare bucket availability. Since one of the OP flights doesn't have "A" available, he is currently being seated in economy. Now, I am not sure as to what happens if the "A" bucket does become available. Maybe a quick call to UA could provide some insight?

If on a fare that has change fees UA will charge you the fee even if buying up to a higher fare class. For example you bought a S fare or something and want to change to a full Y you will get hit with the $150 change fee even though you are buying up.

Hopefully that will change with the new UA, as CO doesn't do that.

If fare classes are close in price and get me better upgrade possibilities I sometimes will buy up on a fare class on CO.

I purchased and H-UP fare, however there were no F seats available in the A bucket, so I got a seat in Y out of the B bucket.

I am not changing fare classes, I want to change to the fare class that I purchased.

I would think that if it goes down to the airport, you'd be on the FFCC list... unless I'm missing something here...
