Friend asks for mileage advice and then insults me (and all of us). What to do?

    So here's the situation:

A friend of mine got an offer regarding converting Amex points into Delta miles and didn't know what to do. So she emailed me and asked for my advice, closing with, "I don't go to any of those crazy websites that you do." Hmm, crazy websites? Us? How insulting.

    So I could:

    A) just give her the best answer
    or
    B) punish her for her misdeeds and push her the wrong way
    or
    C) make her beg a little.

    So what's the answer?

Give her the best answer, wait a week, tell her you found a good deal on a flight, book yourself in F (miles) and her in Y. Tell her this is what happens when you take the time to read up on these crazy websites while sipping Krug.

Email me the necessary information and I'll round up the Milepoint hit squad. (This is not going to be pretty)

Isn't it always good to make her beg, just on general principles?

Tell her that "the 'crazy' people would do [best option]. But the 'sane' people would do [worst option]."

Let her figure out which is which?

So far, yaychemistry is in the lead, although I like MSPeconomist's suggestion, but I'm not sure my wife would.

give her the best option, she might be insulting but she is first and foremost your friend. Just straighten her along the way and she'll soon see the benefits of doing the crazy websites that lovely people like us go to.. :)

Going "to any of those crazy websites" does not mean we are crazy, just intelligent. I l do like the recommendations of JohnDeere19 and yaychemistry.

Oh definitely, make her beg a little... and buy you lunch/dinner/drinks - whatever's appropriate. Knowledge should be compensated, no?

I would certainly take the time and do the F and Y as suggested above. You can definitely tell someone about FF program loyalty until you're blue in the face, but some people will just say they don't have the time.

Now if you show them the benefits first hand, that puts a whole new perspective on it. :)

You know what they say, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink."

As my obsession with earning frequent flyer miles has grown, I've gotten more and more snickers from friends, but I've also gotten more and more requests for help. Everybody's different, some people will never see the value in it, with others, it may take some time before the light bulb goes off.

I find you get the snickers from people that don't know and even then only at first. That goes away FAST the first time you tell them you were in the Maldives on vacation and flew first class or after you fly down to Miami "just to get some dinner" :)

Tell her to exchange all her AR points into DL miles. And just wait for the fun when she tries to redeem them.

    LOL

I was gonna say... unless she's heavily invested on DL or Skyteam, see if she wants to go somewhere else. With the current US Airways promo you can get some serious miles out of a nice transfer and head elsewhere with Star Alliance.

Choose A, for goodness sakes. She values your opinion and will likely appreciate it. She also might be hot or have hot friends. As for her reference to the "crazy websites", do realize that most Milepoint devotees are one, maybe two, or more, standard deviations from some norm. Wear the "slight" with pride, knowing that she likely values you and certainly values your knowledge.

This is decidely NOT one of those situations when some friend's cousin's coworker thinks that your redeemable miles were free to you so you should gladly give them up, spending an hour on a well-engineered award booking, with you paying booking fees and taxes.
