Rich Spear belongs to 13 airline frequent-flier programs, but he's not as big a fan of them as he once was.
It's difficult to redeem miles and understand the "ins and outs" of each program, says the frequent business traveler and technology integration consultant from Cranberry Township, Pa.
"The golden age of frequent-flier programs — when miles were earned by flying and airlines competed for the top customers with promotional offerings and realistic award availability — was the late 1990s and early 2000s," Spear says. "Now, it's just a moneymaker with airlines selling miles to credit card companies, florists and everyone else under the sun, and then limiting when you can use them."

I think that some airlines would love to get out of their frequent flyer program. It was a good marketing idea that has morphed into a monster.
For competitive reasons, no airline wants to pull the plug....so they are slowly killing their programs one cut at a time.

Furthermore, some programs have turned into frequent shopper programs with some flying as an aside.

True, I can't seem to buy anything without MileagePlus shopping in my mind. Then the guilt of missing miles if I do not use the MP shopping portal.

Which brings one to the frequent complaint that frequent flyers compete with frequent shoppers for reward flights.

You are all looking at this from the side of the flyer. I don't think the airlines want to get out of their frequent flyer programs at all. This has turned into a wonderful extra business for them, making money when the airlines fail themselves to make money. There have been talks of spin offs, etc. Of course, they all try to find ways to limit their exposure on the supply side or charge extra fees or surcharges, which is another subject. But, they make money off these programs!

Check out Aeroplan Air Canada's frequent flyer program.
Aeroplan is a separate company which was spun off from the airline.

Air Canada frequent flyers feel disadvantaged dealing with the multitude of shoppers.

My guess is that someobdy who belongs to 13 different ff programs is not effectively making use of alliances and does not understand how to take advantage of the programs as well as he might.

This could explain why certain airlines give more and more miles (SkyPesos anyone?) but also make redemption harder. They need to make earning sound like a good idea so they can sell them in bulk to partners, but they don't want anyone to actually redeem the miles before they have time to devalue them even further. For all UA's other problems, I think MileagePlus actually works pretty well.

I am definitely newish to this game, but typically I will become a member to a program if there is a sign up bonus or free opportunity to get miles. This has worked out for me in the past when airlines merge like Northwest and Delta or now Continental and United.

Fair enough. And I really shouldn't talk as someone who has kept US miles alive that date back to at least PSA if not an Allegheny flight or three.
