Free wireless internet access is the most popular hotel amenity on offer to travellers, according to a survey by GO Airport Express.

The company, which operates shuttle services to and from O'Hare and Midway airports in Chicago, polled 600 people and found that 57% listed Wi-Fi as their favourite hotel freebie aside from breakfast.

Free transportation to the airport was the second most popular option with 30% of the vote, followed by in-room coffee and tea (25%), health club and pool access (17%) and a complimentary newspaper (15%).

The research also highlighted some more obscure hotel provisions, such as ironing boards, free umbrellas to use during wet weather and on-site bicycles to borrow.

Free WiFi shouldn't be a hotel amenity... it should be like running water or electricity - expected.

It's rather silly that, in this day and age, hotels charge for WiFi at all.

I refuse to pay any hotel for WiFi. If I have to pay for the service, I use cellular data instead.

Agreed. At this point in time it should be expected... like free mini bars.

Can anyone explain why someone taking a free ride to/from the airport wouldn't say it's an amenity they like?

It's one I like, but don't expect or even always need. Sometimes I rent a car, and sometimes (e.g. London) public transportation is quite adequate.

I'd rather a room be $10 cheaper than to get free airport transportation, in most cases, unless I'm staying for a very short stay.

I'm pretty sure air conditioning is the most popular amenity. Or bed bug-free sheets. But those are also basic amenities (just like wifi!) that a hotel should have.

You missed my point -- it's not a very random survey -- kinda like a lawyer asking "when did you stop beating your spouse?" at a divorce hearing.
