...just for being a United Premier Executive. My husband and I both got (unsolicited) packets in the mail today with gold cards in them! The info packet included the following address where those with existing accounts can take advantage of the offer.

    HHonors.com/instantgolden

P.S. I'm new to this club. I'm hoping HHonors Gold isn't like Hyatt Gold (their bottom tier) ;)

Thanks for sharing, but it looks like you need the pin number from the letter.

Indeed seems like it's targeted, but the form seems to hint that you could call and maybe get in on the action...

I see. I wonder if they will ask you for your pin when you call in?

The letter doesn't appear to have a PIN number anywhere on it.

Also worth mentioning- there is a promotion
"Earn one free night and 5,000 bonus award miles. After completing five stays between July 1 and October 31, 2011, you'll receive 25,000 HHonors Bonus Points, which you can redeem for one free** night in a standard room at participating hotels, plus 5,000 bonus award miles. ***

**,*** = a bunch of tine print on the back of the letter. It also says that if you are already a HHonors member you can contact Customer Care to qualify for the offer, which is what I most likely will do since I already have an account linked to Topguest with like 500 points in it :) I'll let you know how it goes.

If they were going to continue to devalue the HHonors Program, I wonder why they did not make this offer a Diamond?

It's just one more easy way to get HH Gold, for those who aren't Visa Signature cardmembers and haven't done the MVP challenge. Ii'm not sure how much it devalues the program, when pretty much everyone serious about it is already at least gold.

I doubt it. My wife got the card today, and she's already a HHonors member. The new card has a new number, so it appears they opened a second account for her. I believe the sentence you quoted simply means that in cases like hers she can call and have the new Gold status applied to her old account (essentially merge accounts). I shall do that for her when her current VISA signature-earned Gold status expires at the end of August.

There is a temporary PIN under the card on the letter.

Have you seen what they are getting for rooms lately, points wise?
Supply and demand. For those of us who do the HOP method of Diamond, these fast tracks only cost us more points.

Maybe the ranks of their elites thinned sufficiently after last year's devaluation that they can now afford to give away Gold to targeted members in an attempt to get new loyal members.

Of course, this is not really unprecedented. My wife is really lucky and previously received free SPG Gold status "out of the blue" for being a United elite. Me, I always have to earn it the "hard" way (HHonors/United Elite fast track with four stays in 90 days this time around).

It might actually work. I'm seriously considering changing my reservation for Cabo next month from the Sheraton (where I have no status) to the Hilton- the pools look amazing! :)

And Hhonors Gold will give you free breakfast (with appropriate MyWay selection, check your settings!) and free WiFi.

I got HH Gold as visa signature card member. FWIW, I find the free internet and free b'fast to be the most valuable benefits, not the room upgrades. As to rooms, I'm about 50% at getting an upgrade. Which Is not too bad, since it was about the same as my DL GM upgrade rate.

Also, I can get a free room anytime I want. If HH gives a few token golds out there, I don't think we're losing too much.

From the OP seems like specific United people.

Keep in mind that, as was mentioned before, HHonors Gold is actually not that hard to achieve. You can get it with the current Visa Signature promo they have going or even with 4 stays in 90 days if you sign up.
