Very unfortunate. Not sure if all of this is stoppable, though certainly several airports do checks prior to actually arriving at an airport - not sure that would prevent it either. It will undoubtedly have the effect of adding some security and delays at FRA in the short term. (The Airmen were actually stationed at Lakenheath AB in the UK.)
Last radio report I heard stated that it is now believed that the gunman is/was a German airport employee. If true, that's very, very unfortunate. (The whole situation is bad & will likely add more security & delays).
If there is anything positive on this, it's that it took place on the bus outside the terminal, rather than inside. But the stories I heard make it very obvious that American military are at risk, and it's a short jump to think that any American may be at risk.
Very sad to receive the news alert about the shooting! I'll be going to FRA on Friday, so I'm interested to see what the security reaction is like.
