OTTAWA - A French-language rights group is denouncing Air Canada for requiring a union to waive the rights of workers to have their collective agreement translated into French.

Jean-Paul Perreault, president of Imperatif francais, suggested that the agreement, reached on June 16, was a violation of the airline's obligations under the Official Languages Act which protects the rights of English and French-speaking minority communities across the country.

Normand Veillette, the vice president of a Montreal airport unit for customer sales and services under the Canadian Autoworkers Union, said union officials signed the agreement under the threat of back-to-work legislation that would have imposed jail time or heavy fines. He explained that he also did not see the clause within the agreement immediately because of the size of the document.

Air Canada, a former Crown corporation, was required to maintain its obligations under the federal language legislation, to protect minority English and French-language rights as a condition of its privatization.

Perreault said the case is another example in a long list of problems with the airline that have prompted complaints, mainly because of services and operations that were not offered to francophones. He said the federal government should intervene to force the airline to resolve the problems.

 <sorry, had to do it>

If this group was serious about upholding the language calls in this country it should be called Imperatif Bilingue! (or better not to saddle one airline with a set of rules other airlines do not need to abide by -- after all, its only been 23yrs since it was privatized.

back to your usual programming... ;)
