Happily I just acquired an IATA-compliant carryon (Rimowa!) last week so I'm all set. At least until they start installing scales at the gates to check the weights ...

Even with the long-standing $25 checked bag fee on trans-border flights, many times the gate agents have announced that "due to a full flight, overhead bin space will be at a premium" - then offered to check bags for free through to destination at the gate.

I guess this offer will be gone.

Hopefully so. That will speed up door closing and takeoff. But if they do charge at the door that would be awful.

One problem is pax with two large pieces (carry-on and "personal") who insist putting both of them in the overheads. One piece should go under the seat, really ...

Out of SFO today, gate agents made several clear announcements that they would be checking ALL bags as passengers were boarding to ensure they fit in the sizers. Priority passengers seemed to be exempt from this check, but it did seem to make more folks come and check their bags in the sizer and more take their bags to the desk for check-in. Must have worked as there did not seem to be alot of time spent on finding luggage space once on board.

This is a big plus of controlling carry-on luggage.

Did they take credit cards at the gate for the baggage fee?

Coming up north from Vancouver on my last trip into the mines, sitting in my usual seat 1D gave me a ringside view of the SD gonging women (as they boarded) for having purse plus two bags, telling them "you know better, that's too much stuff, don't try that again". There were still a lot of kitchen-sink-sized wheeliebags coming on board, anyway.

Marvel that we took off at all, given that load.....

No checking at LHR today, but the SD on the flight said that not all airports are enforcing the rules yet. And she did confirm that J pax may get some "latitude" on the luggage size checks ...

When they have done this pre boarding luggage check in the past they pretty much left J pax alone. I think one would also get a less cursory look if they have SE tags on their bag no matter what class they are in.

    Size matters

The bag's only crime was that it was just half an inch deeper than Air Canada’s nine-inch limit.

Ferland has a tag that came with her suitcase that states, “official carry-on.” But the fine print underneath warns the owner to check a specific airline’s rules. That’s because different carriers have different carry-on size restrictions.

Her bag would have passed a British Airways test; that airline allows a maximum depth of 10 inches.

Width and height limits also vary among carriers. For example, WestJet’s height limit is 21 inches, Air Canada's is 21.5 and Porter Airlines's limit is 22. Those measurements include a case's wheels and handle.

...this may have already been suggested, but why not use the same method as for checked baggage, substituting 46" (9+15.5+21.5) for 62".

    From AC website:

"Max. linear dimensions per bag: 158 cm (62in).
The maximum linear dimensions of a piece of baggage are calculated by adding together its greatest outside height, width and length - wheels and handles included."

I'm realizing the convenience for AC staff to use sizers would probably trump using a tape measure, but it would sure help in managing all the non-standard luggage issues. I also realize that a 1"X1"X44" bag will also cause an issue, but it seems AC staff are able to overcome with length limit, and common sense when checking bags.

    Again from AC website:

"You will need to contact Air Canada Cargo if you’re travelling with bags that exceed:
    • 32 kg (70 lb) in weight,
    • 292 cm (115 in) in linear dimensions, and/or
    • 203 cm (80 in) in length."

    ...just a thought.

    Cheers,

    NoahVail
