My sister and BIL are in HNL till Monday evening. They have a flight for 8pm on AA, no status, but were wondering if it is possible to fly standby for the 12pm flight. They called about changing it out right, but it will be $500ai. The reason for the inquiry is that we have a funeral to go to on Tuesday morning. The whole family is telling her no need for her to be there, but she wants to at least explore all options short of the $500 change fee/price difference. Could she arrive early and try to get on the flight as a standby? What are the protocols and possibilities.

    Thank you in advance!

Now that changes things. I think she will try and do that and come back for the funeral. Thanks, Seth!

And, I would say there's a reasonable chance a benevolent ticket agent might waive the $75 fee if you're attending a funeral. I wouldn't bank on it but it can't hurt to ask.
