Need tips: I am planning a trip for my 80 years old mother from US to PNH in F class using UA miles. Dilemmas: 1) She can only walk short distance due to bad back. 2) She knows very little English. What's the best way to help her flying experience to be more enjoyable pertaining to connections and etc?

Is she going to be travelling on her own? The trip you are sending here on would be a trip of a lifetime for her I would imagine and it would be an experience someone should be there to share with her.

Yes, she will be flying solo. She has flown international before but that was 10 years ago and she flew in coach.

I'm guess requesting a wheelchair for her would do the trick. They would I presume take her to her connecting gate. Also maybe a phone with your number on speed dial for any questions.

It might be a good idea to to call customer service and ask them to note on the PNR:
    • 80 years old mother with some mobility issues.
    • Limited English
    • Emergency contact number

BNA-IAD-FRA-BKK-PNH, that would be the most ideal and she speaks Khmer

also it would be good to have her itin. printed out in English as well'as a note that she doesn't speak english, maybe in one of those envelope things people wear around their neck. you could also ask if the airline provides a service like unaccompanied minor so that she is escorted to each of her many connections.

OP - What airlines will she be flying on? Can you fly with your mom? I believe she would like to have someone with her to share the F experience. Just a little concerned for your mom with the connections and language barrier...

Put her on Lufthansa or Swiss First Class for the long haul segments and she'll receive all the necessary ground services handling as well as being taken care of... LH is usually on the ball in regards to ground services for their F passengers.

In addition to the above, I'd make sure that you've got something she can print out with common questions she might need to ask printed in English (with Khmer also so she knows what she's asking). Print the English in 18 point and the Khmer in a smaller font size she can read and leave space between questions. If she'll have a mobile phone and can call you (or someone else who can translate), that will also help.

But yes, make sure she gets a wheelchair, that'll help a lot because it'll get her gate to gate with little fuss.

TG is pretty darn good with their ground services too from what I experienced in BKK.
