In the early 1980s, Delta Airlines found itself with a challenging situation. The American economy was in a slump and fuel prices were up dramatically. More than 40,000 airline industry employees lost jobs and Eastern had gone out of business altogether. Delta unexpectedly gave its employees a salary increase.

The Wall St. Journal suggested investors avoid Delta’s stock as its employee costs were too high. A flight crew sitting in Jacksonville, on what they referred to as a “lean over”– short of a “lay over” – read the WSJ and began a conversation about their employer. Ginny W. Oxford, Jean Owens and Diane Carvelli wondered what they could do to show their gratitude to Delta. One said, “Why don’t we buy Delta an airplane?" These were employees who had been with Delta for more than a decade and felt it was a unique company.

I loved flying the "Spirit of Delta" - it was a great reminder of the Delta "Love to Fly & it Shows" era.

was this the one that was painted in a heritage paint scheme?

If so, I saw it in PDX and PHX on consecutive trips with NW -- probably on flights to/from ATL

Yesterday at DTW I saw a habitat for humanity plane in blue, navy, and white paint parked at the DL terminal, IIRC gate A52, so I assume it's a DL plane. I've never before noticed this bird anywhere.

It's part of Delta's "Force for Global Good:" http://www.delta.com/about_delta/global_good/index.jsp

We flew on that plane once SCL-ATL & I joked with the FA...we don't have to pay in sweat equity & remodel the plane in flight, do we? :)

The Spirit 767 is now at Delta's museum in Atlanta, a fitting tribute.
