From a story in the LA Times. Five Guys is good, don't get me wrong, but it's not a fair comparison to a lot of the "flat patty" places - two very different kinds of burgers. The real competition, at least in Austin, is with Mighty Fine. And while I don't think we've gotten a SmashBurger here yet, Five Guys definitely wins that race.

agreed. Flat patty will NEVER win vrs a full patty cooked on a charcoal grill IMO.

Most everyone has a better burger place in their backyard/nearby area than any of the places listed, but most don't search out local places & default to chains. Sad as there are usually FAR better burgers to be had if one just snifs around a little.

I searched and missed that... and it's not linked from you, either, Gary. Where's the thread? Or is that very, very dry humor (unlike the burgers?)?

You realize that New Yorkers will squawk that Shake Shack didn't make the list. Some will say the people that prepared the survey were afraid to list them. :p

We pass a White Castle on the Brooklyn Reality Tour aka BRT. I have been known to stop (once).

I didn't think Five Guys was all that different from my other favorite, In-N-Out, but the soda machine that allows mixing all flavors with any of the drinks was enough to make me consider driving extra 10 miles a few times.

I've had 5 guys several times, mostly at the Hwy 7 & Weston location in Vaughan, ON (closest location to where we live). Love their bacon burger.

I don't agree with any of them. All are basically ground meat without any taste to the burger at all. Just cooked meat. Have to stay with the locals that care about taste.

(I particularly dislike In-N-Out. No taste whatsoever. Cook the meat until it is gray and then cover it with sauce.)

    Just my opinions.

(And in the late night throes of maybe too much alcohol, White Castle Sliders are great And they actually have a taste. Not sure what the taste is . Could be Feline or Canine at Midnight or later)

"Jakes Wayback" burgers are pretty much the same as Five guys, but the Five guys Fries are better!

I'm a New Yorker and, although I haven't done a head-to-head comparison, I think I prefer Five Guys. And I'm not sure Shake Shack is big enough, yet, to qualify as a full-blown chain (although I don't know how many locations they actually have).

As a WAS guy with lots of "higher" end burger choices, I have to agree with the survey. Five Guys really is better. Better than Ray's Hell Burger; better than BGR, etc... (the true competition rather than McD's)

The best thing about Five Guys are the free peanuts.

I think Five Guys is too salty for my tastes. After living in Vegas this past summer, I much prefer Smashburger which has locations in the West Coast. In-n-Out is not the greatest either...

I too like Five Guys. Their burgers are consistently juicy and their fries are really good. Plus, I like the idea of the peanuts too. There is one not far from my house, a 10 minute drive tops; so, no problem there! ;)

Go with "The Works" on a bacon-cheese burger. Messy. Enjoy!

I have only tried A&W and 5 Guys of the ones in the top 5, and Five Guys is certainly the best chain burger I've had. As others have said, you can usually find a better local burger place in town, however, I have yet to find it in Orlando. I really haven't had good BBQ here either.
