It is flying but the actual delivery hasn't happened yet. A ceremony is expected at the end of the week for the actual event.

That makes sense but why is it using a United rather than Boeing flight #?

Probably because all of the certification documents are under UA's name and therefore can't be a Boeing flight number. The handover is symbolic as a lot of the paperwork is already completed before that date to ensure that there are no "kinks" that could otherwise delay the rollout into the UA system.

    The Hub confirms it, too:

    https://hub.united.com/en-us/News/Company-Operations/Pages/united-takes-delivery-of-787.aspx

On Saturday, September 22, we took ownership of our first 787 Dreamliner. This week is a busy one as we prepare to fly the aircraft from Boeing Field in Seattle to our Houston hub. As we’ve announced in previous articles, United is the first North American carrier to take delivery of the 787, and this aircraft is the first of five new Dreamliners we expect to receive this year out of a total order of 50.

Jeff Smisek, our president and CEO, said, “As the North American launch customer, we are delighted to be getting our first 787 Dreamliner. As we continue to build the world’s leading airline, we are excited for our customers and co-workers to experience this game-changing aircraft.”

Later this week, our first 787 will arrive in Houston, where we’ll begin a month-long training and certification program that includes non-commercial flights to several of our domestic hubs. Our Houston hub will serve as the base for all of the initial aircraft that we induct into the fleet.

The 787 will enter into previously announced domestic service (November) and international service (December). We plan to operate our inaugural 787 commercial flight from Houston to Chicago on November 4 at 7:25 a.m.

Lots of training flights, both for in-flight and ground crews.

The plane had it's first flight after delivery yesterday and they'll be doing test runs up to Moses lake the next few days. There were some simple errors on yesterday's flights, if all goes according to planned, it will fly to Houston on Thursday. Revenue flights are not expected for at least a month

Nice! I can't wait to see it in Houston. That Hub post makes it sound official that 11/4 is the actual first commercial flight, but I know the feeling was there may very well be some before then. Wonder if that is still the case?

No. I'm sure the company will let us know before hand. It might be on display for Family Day (during Fleet Week) in Oct.

That's what I was hoping. If it's not needed for training that weekend, it would make sense (to me) to show it to the employees there.... and, uh, the invited guests :)

Get my first flight in one on my way back from Europe in Nov. As a Boeing employee who worked on this project in Italy I'm looking forward to being in one actually in the air. BTW - actual delivery was yesterday (9/24).

I just boarded IAH-PHL at C-14 (3:56 departure). The GA told me they need to get us out since that's the gate it'll be pulling up to. Hoping to get a glimpse as we taxi out.

There were a couple dozen folks watching on the top of Term D parking. There were important folks bused in down on the ground. They did a water cannon salute and then continued to the terminal. I assume there was some event in there. Started pouring just minutes after landing.

We were bussed out to the tarmac for photos, then bussed to the B hangar. Due to the rain they pulled the plane in halfway, causing some interesting lighting issues. There was a short interview with the pilots and more photos and that was that.
