    Hi guys. Longtime lurker, and first-time poster. Im trying to use up all of my UA points before February for obvious reasons, and having trouble with a multi-destination booking.

    Is there any reason why the following shouldnt work for a single trip:

    Oct7 ORD -> YYZ -> FCO

    ::5day stopover in FCO::

    Oct13 FCO -> LIS

    Oct18 LIS -> EWR -> ORD

    I'm having trouble trying to getting to the menu to select flights. It keeps erroring me out and saying I'm not following the award booking rules!

    Thanks so much

    Just writing this out so that I can keep my thoughts straight as I provide an answer...

    You are booking a roundtrip award, which is allowed to have one stopover and two open jaws.

    *Your origin is ORD (flying UA or AC)
    *You have less than a 24-hour connection in YYZ to FCO (flying AC) [at least that's the option on which you see award space to FCO]
    *You're utilizing your stopover in FCO
    *You then want to fly to LIS (on TP), your destination
    *You will return and connect through EWR (on TP or UA) to return to ORD
    *You're not actually using any open jaws
    *AC and TP are both visible and bookable on UA.com

    Looks absolutely fine, and I was just able to mimic the exact booking you want on UA.com. As an economy award, it priced out at 60K miles and $97.80 in taxes. I didn't see business/first space, though I wasn't looking that hard.

    Whats the problem here. :(
    I'm sure its something obvious, but I guess I need a second pair of eyes to point it out to me.

    Oh, Im clearly a dumbass :(

    I just had to consolidate the flights. I had broken them down. Sigh.

    New question: If I reserve the flights using my credit card, will I get charged the full fare if I dont ultimately use miles to book it?

    You're not dumb...

    Just do the following on the search page...

    10/7 ORD -> FCO
    10/13 FCO -> LIS
    10/18 LIS -> ORD

    You mean, when they give you a choice like:
    "Buy this ticket in economy class for $6599" or something like that?

    Only if you agree to be charged with $$$$ will they charge your credit card.
    If you dont agree to be charged with miles or money, you wont have any ticket and any charge.

    Yep. I got it!

    Now Im just trying to figure out if UA will actually try to charge my credit card the full fare if I reserve the flights without enough miles in the account. Do you have any knowledge of this?

    I am trying to reserve trips for multiple people from multiple cities across the US (we will be meeting up at YYZ, but embarking separately). I dont want to book the trips unless I know that will get saver award bookings for each individual.

    Im worried that if I try to back-out of a reserved award booking (without actually handing over my miles) they will charge my card instead.

    That will be tricky because Award Inventory is dynamic...

    How many people are traveling? You'd need that # of seats for all other flights together. It's hard BUT not impossible to find availability for many people on a single flight.

    If you're that concerned just phone it in. The agents should be able to hold the award for a few days pending the miles transferring over from Chase.

    Im asking what happens if I use the highlighted option, but try to back out later. (ignore the flight schedule selected, I just rapidly clicked any random saver flights)

    ETA: Wandering Aramean has given a good option already.

    You can cancel a reservation made on UA.com within 24 hours of purchase....no questions asked.
    Yes, the taxes might be charged when you click "purchase"....but, eventually it will get refunded if you cancel in 24 hours.
    (sometimes the charge may remain "pending" on your c.c...and you would already cancel the ticket in that time...so the charge never goes through )

    Ok!

    I'll give it a shot that way. Thanks for all of the insights; sorry for being a UA noob!

    The reservation will expire and you'll not be on the hook for the cash fare. No risk there.
