NYCAviation has a nice article and accompanying photos from President Obama's visit to Boeing's Everett plant which featured the 5th United delivery (55th built) 787 in the background.

According to the article, since planes don't get painted that early in the process, the "paint" is actually some high quality 3M stickers of the bingo cage on the tail and the United lettering on the side.

They couldn't find one with engines?

Attaching the engines is one of the last steps; they are quite expensive and there is no point spending the scratch cash on them until you are actually going to use them.

And the planes go to the paint shop even later in the process, though the tail fin is painted in advance due to the critical balance issues associated with that.

It's correct that Boeing aircraft are painted quite late, IIRC after they are moved out of the huge assembly building.

They didn't want to pay the checked bag fees for the engines. Can't blame them -- it would have been charged as oversized.

So that settles the burning question of the 787's status - it's clearly a 2P I mean, Silver

Sure, but when I was there over a year ago they had plenty of 787s with engines parked outside. I guess they didn't have the right livery. Having the President speak in front of an ANA or JAL aircraft... would have sent the message that our technology is in demand abroad and we don't just import from Asia.

I would imagine that it would be rather difficult to get one of those from out on the apron back into line inside the assembly line without screwing the delivery dates even more than they already are.

Apparently this one is not "built to last" as the banner proclaims. I'm looking forward to another "recovery summer."

Well, the gray belly and the golden stripe are missing, too. (guess they didn't have enough 3M stickers for that)

I keep chuckling when I hear these 787s called "United" they are now United due to the merger but it was Continental that placed the order and the configuration will be the Continental business first not the three class United configuration.
I will however be anxious to ride on them when they enter service.

Get ready for a brave new world where not every long-haul plane will have a 3-cabin configuration. It is coming quickly.

Aside from the name United, everything else is Continental (color scheme, logo, etc.) so don't be too worried.

Isn't the planned route for the 787 IAH-AKL? Does anyone fly from NA to AKL in 3 class?

I've been used to this for a long time. First NW eliminated IFC TATL in favor of WBC, like KLM, and then after some downgrades, such as eliminating having the Asian FA/translator change into a kimono, they eliminated IFC TPAC. Except for SQ, it's been a while since I've experienced IFC.

Does anyone offer IFC to/from AKL at all? If not it's pointless to look for longer connections such as NRT or SIN.
