I am at LAX on my first last min MR!!! It's really short but I am going from LAX-ORD on a red eye. I just need a few thousand miles to reach EXP with AA. I now know I might be a mileage junkie

Congratulations. Is this your first time making it to EXP?

I remember my first "MR" over a decade ago. I flew SFO-ORD-MKE all on mainline UA a/c. That was also to make it to mid-tier Premier Exec level on UA for the first time. I was excited to make it to Premier Exec at the time, which was much better than Premier, the entry elite level at the time.

Adding on MKE significantly lowered the cost, but it was still kind of expensive as a pure MR.

I got off the plane in MKE, handed them my paper 500 miler cert, got my upgraded BP and got right back on the same plane in the same seat with the same crew. :)

ORD-MKE-ORD had channel 9. MKE departure put us right into the ORD arrival flow. 67 mile flight.

We've done MRs where we have the same crew both direction on trips like DTW-PHX and the reaction from one of the FAs when we got on board on the way home was 'wow that was a short meeting.'

Quite often we'll run into other people doing the same thing.

I was actually thinking about a visit to In-n-Out... Several "Planespotters" that I know speak very highly of the good food, and good views of the air traffic.
    Thanks!

Thanks. This is my first time making EXP. I arrived at ORD at 6am and was on my way back to LAX at 7. I have to say I am kinda beat right now. For me to sleep while football on is kinda a big deal lol.

I would say In-N-Out for sure and it will probably take you 7 hrs to get a hamburger by the one at LAX.

Second the in-n-out. If you're lucky a 380 might zoom right by. Like Desamo said, you're not too far from Venice beach and there's lots to see and do around there and Santa Monica is just a bit farther. But if you don't feel like traveling too far - and you're brave ;) - there's also the Encounter at LAX www.encounterlax.com

Encounter is only good if you want to overpay for already overpriced airport food, but with a decent view. Worth at least one trip though.

Venice Beach is a people watching mecca. Santa Monica has the world famous Pier and the Promenade which is also a great place to catch talented buskers at work.

As a local (I work/live minutes from LAX), I definitely recommend the nearby in 'n out. Getting food only takes about 15-20 minutes at the busiest, and I say this from many delicious visits. Outside there is a mostly hidden row of tables closer to the runway that give you the best views of the planes flying in overhead. If you check with the LAX arrival calendar on your phone, you can make sure you are there when one of the big ones come in.

Other than that, Venice and Santa Monica are a bit far. I like Manhattan Beach which is closer and has some good restaurants (Simzy's if you have time and transportation), and a beautiful coastline. Have fun

Thanks for the tips! I think I will try the In-N-Out, and try to catch a few arrivals. I don't want to venture too far away from the airport, as it's my first visit. I am looking for another run to LAX in late Feb or March, when I can hopefully get a longer layover in LAX.
