After 35 years of flying, I experienced my first takeoff abort at LAX this morning. We were just about to rotate when the pilot slammed on the brakes of the 757. We did not know it at the time, but there was an engine/fuel pump issue the pilot detected just before going airborne. The crew safely stopped the plane before running out of runway (as many of you know, LAX taking off to the west is not the greatest place to run out of runway). This was a good reminder to appreciate the skill and training of the men and women that take us around the country and around the world every day. My thanks to the crew of UA 776, LAX-DEN – their skill kept us safe to fly another day.
