MSNBC just reported that the pilot deployed the chutes (personally?).

Man that must take some real practice jumping out that little window in the cockpit and pulling the rip cord, deploying his chute, all in a matter of seconds!!!

    Interesting quote:

Susannah Fox, a passenger aboard the plane, tweeted, "Just evacuated United flight 586 on tarmac at IAD. All OK and I kinda liked the slide."

    I like her additude:p

I mean... it is awesome to slide down off an aircraft once just so you can say you've done it.

Cable news is reporting that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg was a passenger on that plane and that no fire was found.

I did it at the DL training center at ATL, as part of Road Warrier Training at the DL ATL DO in October of last year. When you're standing at the top, the slide looks long and very steep.

Yes it would be fun alright, that is unless you were half way to LHR doing the polar route.

I don't know if it would be fun under the cercumstances it was deployed (real life evacuation). I would be the guy sitting in 21A (if not seating up front) and pulling the damn door open and telling everyone get the hell out of the plane!
Just sounds like more work and stress then just having fun (lol).:)

I'm trained on the CRJs and ERJs and have done actual evacuations out of a CRJ more than once (not for training or simulated purposes) and yes it's a pain sometimes but the one off a 757 was fun for me since it was long and steep but it comes with the territory sometimes.

Isn't there a little red tube you can blow into in case it didn't fully inflate, or did I misunderstand the pre-flight security briefing? :D

*sighs* SLC eh... and for the record it's the pre-flight safety briefing ... the security briefing wouldn't be seen by any passengers ever...

I was just thinking the same thing before I read your post!
I would be the guy speed reading the little card that I have been handed a million times and asked if I understood it!

I suspect if you wait to blow up the slide using the little red tube, you will be the last one off the aircraft.
