not sure where to post this, but....

Ottawa allows pedestrian tunnel to Toronto Island airport

"The federal government has cleared the way for a pedestrian tunnel to connect downtown Toronto with its island airport.
Transport Minister Denis Lebel says regulations have been changed to allow construction of the tunnel allowing people to walk to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.
At the moment, travellers must take a short ferry ride to the airport."

only problem I see -- "The port authority has said the cost of the tunnel will be covered by a mix of private sector financing and an airport improvement fee."

Toronto is not known for preserving its buildings nor its waterfront :(

I guess the ferry is a nice ride in the summer (I did that once this summer) but cannot imagine how it is in Feb.

I've done it in February or March. It's fine.

I'll be doing it tomorrow, and back the other way Saturday. I enjoy Porter!

what, you don't like the wall of condos and the Gardiner Expressway? :p

    have no fear

'The Toronto Port Authority says it will be building a $45-million pedestrian tunnel to the Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport.
"We're going to build a tunnel that's esthetically beautiful," Geoffrey Wilson, the federal agency's president and CEO, said Monday.
"It's going to be very functional, very easy to use, very pleasing to use for those who haven't previously experienced using a tunnel to access an airport."

No doubt it will have an express walkway as efficient as those in the Domestic-to-International passageway in YYZ (where you think you're walking halfway to Asia!) Plus lots of aesthetically beautiful grafitti.

What, exactly, is wrong with the current ferry? It's needed for vehicular traffic as well as pedestrians. And, amazingly, it works.

Only half way, I thought it was at least 2/3rds ;)

I had it stop about 1/3rd of the way along last time I took it. So I was stuck walking the rest of the way.

Well, there was one day I was flying transborder and it felt like the line for customs went all the way to Asia (I made the mistake of flying on Canada day)

I guess that'll bring the YTZ fees closer to those of YYZ ... anyway, as a non-YTZ user, I prefer this to using general tax funds for the tunnel. ;)

I would use YTZ with AC if the flights are what I needed - but given the tunnel will be a walk anyway I likely would take the ferry - they are not getting rid of the ferry is my understanding, and I am unsure what real value the tunnel would give.

Does anyone here use YTZ regularly? Aside from the concern about winter, what real value will the tunnel bring?

How long is the proposed tunnel?

I believe the distance from the mainland to the airport is around 400 ft (122m) so the tunnel would likely be someone longer (and deeper ;)) than that.

I guess at least they did not go ahead with the planned bridge!

You could prebuild the tunnel and sink it in place.

Now that is a thought! However that would likely be too cost efficient for Toronto City Council or whoever is doing the planning

Lack of foresight is not only the prerogative of Toronto City Council......my beef about Winnipeg council has been the same for the past 19 years. For some members.....it is institutionalized imbecility. :(

Might be tricky. That channel is an important route for boating, so you'd need a way to maintain the same depth. I suppose you could dig a trench into which to sink the pre-fab tunnel.....

I have flown Porter in and out of YTZ about a dozen times or so. I make the trip a couple of times per year, which I guess qualifies as regular, if not necessarily frequent.

I have seen the waiting room for the ferry get quite full at peak times. I don't know how often people can't get on the ferry due to space limitations, and thus have to wait for the next one. Certainly that could be a factor in limiting growth of the airport. If it's a frequent emough problem, then that would be the value of the walkway. I'm flying Porter today. I'll ask the FA and report back.

I would miss the ferry, though. It's part of the charm of using YTZ.

I have used YTZ a few times, but Wandering Aramean has probably done the trip more often. The ferry runs on a frequent basis, but for the distance of 120m, the time to distance ratio can get a bit long, esp if you miss one.

There are 2 ferries with milk runs every 15min - David Hornell (after a Victoria Cross recipient) and Marilyn Bell (who could swim faster than the ferry :D) and they are enclosed so I think winter crossing is less arduous for passengers. The second ferry was is being paid through the airport improvement fee.

The one other thing I see as beneficial about the tunnel is if planes land at later times in the night (past midnight as an emergency) it may reduce the noise, worker and safety concerns by having the tunnel available for use (and not stranding passengers on the island).

One other note, Billy Bishop is probably the third largest passenger airport in Ontario, so it may warrant more than one mode of transportation.

I do not believe there is any plan to get rid of the ferry ... the tunnel will be in addition to the ferry.
