    hmm.. I hadn't heard before that Irish pubs were declining. Seems a shame.

    They declined during the recent recession, nearly 1000 Irish pubs vanished, but the trade is growing again, plus new restaurants are opening up too. Overall however people seem to prefer "fast food" and "casual dining" over "fine dining". That's the main observation, at least for now. IMHO, value is important, but so is quality, health, taste and setting. It all depends.
