Am embarking on a Platinum challenge, knowing I've got three transcon flights in the next two months. I'm now trying to book my first flight, which needs to be from SFO-WAS, then WAS to SAN. It's a business trip, so while 1 connection is OK, going crazy on the routing is going to cause issues. On the plus side, however, I'm allowed to fly first class as long as the total cost doesn't go much past $2K.

On the American website, I asked for my cities and dates in unrestricted first class. It came back with a great set of flights connecting in DFW, at the right time and at the right price. The fare code is KA0UPPMR, and I'm trying to figure out if that gets me the 1.5 points per mile. It should, but does the K mean its K class?

Any help interpreting this would be great. I've got Kravlev's book beside me, but it's as confusing as the fare code!

Call AA reservation and ask. If they say yes to 1.5 miles, you have at least a 50-50 chance that is so. If they say no, odds are higher that they are correct.

Just saw earlier answer. Looks like there is no need to call unless you want to see if they can help you do a 1.5x reservation.

I don't see how it can be a K fare, since that's a military fare and this is first class. I'm wondering if it's a KUP fare, which would post as P (and thus get 1.5).

UPDATE: Took the risk and purchased the ticket, and after I'd paid the confirmation screen showed it as Booking Class P. That means I'll pick up 7,600 points for this trip, and on the next one, should be able to enjoy Plat status on the return leg. Wahoo!

P is, indeed, a fare class that earns 1.5 EQP/mile. You're good to go!

So that I can get a little smarter about things, what is a KUP fare? What does the A and 0 stand for? Why are these different? I know the long string of letters and numbers means something -- I just don't know what!

xUP Fares are discounted First Class Fares that 'masquerade' as expensive Economy Fares (to confuse accountants).

The "long string of letters" is the Fare Basis Code that identifies each Fare. To find-out everything about a Fare, you need to refer to the Fare & Routing Rules.
