A family of smokers has been arrested after refusing to stop smoking cigarettes aboard a flight.

A Sunwing flight from Halifax bound for the Dominican Republic was forced to land in Bermuda Friday night after a family refused to stop smoking cigarettes on the plane.

CBC News reported that police were called to the airport around 9:55 p.m. to meet Sunwing flight 454, which was on its way to Punta Cana.

Authorities said the police boarded the plane and arrested the three smokers.

Maybe they have been in a coma since 1990 when the in-flight smoking ban was put in place.

Good, glad they were arrested. Totally stupid on their part to think they were going to get away with smoking on a plane.

Now we can replace "snakes" with "smokers" in Samuel L Jackson's classic line from Snakes on a Plane.

or the attitude of just let me throw my cigarette trash anywhere I want, out a car window, onto a lawn, etc etc.

Also the self centered pieces of crap that toss their butts while hiking/camping, such a wonderful thing to see cigarette butts when one is hiking on a majestic trail or even while walking through an urban park.

Maybe the Smokers couldn't afford to go to Bermuda so they devised a stratagem that would land them on BDA. :D

Not true. I was on AY flight last year and I saw a guy "smoking" that. I, myself, used it in a restaurant. I'm pretty sure it's legal to use them on-board.

"Therefore, the DOT issued an e-cigarette ban proposal in September 2011 and public comments were accepted until November 2011." The flight I was referring to took place in early September '11. This might explain it.

Yeah, but that was just to help you with your confusion :)

"DOT believes its current ban on smoking of tobacco products is broad enough to include electronic cigarettes but wants to eliminate any confusion."

And you may also have violated carrier-specific rules. E.g., United:

    http://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/dangerous.aspx?Mobile=1
The use of electronic, simulated smoking materials (such as electronic cigarettes, pipes or cigars) is prohibited on United Airlines.

I, actually, never used e-cig on a plane. I said that I saw someone doing it. And it wasn't United, it was Finnair. I did use it in a restaurant though in NYC.

Not to mention beaches! Smokers think "Oh, it's tobacco, it's natural, it degrades," but cigarettes have lots of non-biodegradable materials, not to mention they are packed with toxic chemicals. They pollute and last a very long time.

Stupid would be thinking they can smoke them undetected. Refusing to stop is way beyond stupid.
