And suddenly there was an influx of "customers" returning clay iPads that allegedly were in their package.

You'd think that, but if these thieves went to the trouble of making a clay ipad 2 of the right dimensions (size, mass), you can bet they made sure the box looked like it had never been opened. If a product has not been opened, they are typically just restocked without inspection.

I remember going with my dad's girlfriend to help her pick out a portable hard drive. I explained all the specs, showed her which ones were best. She was very appreciative. Then it sat unopened at home for two months before she finally looked inside and saw two packs of batteries instead of a hard drive.

Fortunately Best Buy took it back without any hassle.

Just a note about the scammers' tactics. This article below adds that the scammers had apparently re-shrink-wrapped the boxes to make them appear brand new. If I were a store employee, I'd probably just take it at face value, too, given the right weight and the fact that it's sealed. Also:

Which I guess means they will no longer resell returns, but ship them back to Apple.

So be wary of any iPads being sold on ebay from Canada, new with all accessories, but without a box ;)

Pretty crazy story! I read it earlier today...
I was wondering- maybe the people in Canada were looking for a really expensive iPad Play Doh mold. :)

Those scammers are pretty ingenious. I can just imagine someone getting one for a gift and being mighty upset. I wouldn't mind buying one if it was cheap, and using it as a gag present, though.

It makes perfect sense, an iPad is just the latest iteration of the clay tablet.

And here is a later version, with enhanced graphics capabilities:
