At the end of this year I have about 50K CP points that will expire. Assuming something doesn't come up where I'll actually use them for stays, are there any reasonable options for transfers? I've seen that aside from Southwest, most of the airline transfers are 5 to 1. Does Choice ever change those rates?
I can also trade them in for about $150 in gift cards.

I actually bought most of them during a Discover America promo, so I'd like to get at least what I paid for them in value ~$210.

Surely there's a better trade/transfer idea out there to get more value. Anyone?
    Thanks!

Why not look at using them for hotel stays? There are some good deals in Europe (Rome in particular) and if you are looking for something at the nicer end, why don't you look at some of the hotels listed in the Ascend collection. I know that you have a short booking window (30 days domestic and 60 days international), but sometimes you get lucky and can book European hotels for 8,000 points/ night!

I realize the great value in Europe, but unfortunately I won't be heading there before the points expire. :( I wish I could though.

Visit the Shoreline Inn, an Ascend Collection Hotel, in Muskegon, MI during the summertime! Gorgeous hotel (you have enough points to book a corner room overlooking Lake Muskegon and harbor for a whole weekend!) and the Lake Michigan shoreline is truly God's gift to the USA. White sand and fresh water up and down the coastline. Muskegon is great, and Holland, Saugatuck, Whitehall, Frankfort, and Ludington are all just an hour or two drive away. Fly into GRR, rent a car, and enjoy a weekend in PureMI!

Go on the CP site and buy a 1,000 miles for $11. It should keep them alive plus you get another 1,000 points.

Actually, Choice Hotels has a hard expiration date, there is no way to keep them alive past that date.

Really. One less reason to stay at Choice hotels I'd say. Learn something new everyday. I do most of my hotel stays at IHG or Hilton so I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge on CP.
Will booking a room and letting it sit for a few weeks and then cancelling the reservation work???

No, it no longer works. Also, with Choice, you can only book 30 days in advance, unless you are elite with them. For international properties, it is 60 days. You definitely have to earn and burn with Choice. However, the occasional sale on European properties makes it worthwhile to keep points around.

I have about 3000 choice points, half of which will expire at the end of this year. Not enough to transfer to an airline program, it seems, and without doing the exact math I doubt it's worth buying the missing points to do the transfer.

At least they didn't cost me anything (thanks, Topguest) ;)

You can always redeem the 3,000 points for magazines or give to charity.

Right, I was looking at the mags earlier today. No need to rush it, since I have until the end of the year. Should probably put it in my calendar, though.

Choice points expire on Dec. 31 of the year two years after you acquire them. So, if you were to acquire Choice points today , they would expire on Dec. 31, 2015. Also, many folks have reported that you actually need to use on Dec. 30 or earlier, because they actually actually expire on the day of Dec. 31, not at midnight. As others have reported, you can NOT extend your points beyond this expiry. It's use them or lose them with Choice.

Thrash & Daninstl, IDK if it's supposed to do this or if I got lucky, but I had 28K expiring points on 30 Dec. 2012, so I booked 2 nights @10K & 1 @ 8K. On 30 Jan. 2013 I got a phone call from the 8K point hotel that their water heater had broken, so they were canceling all ressies incl. mine for that night. I went to the choice Website to cancel & got my 8K back with a new expiry date of 31 Dec. 2015!
So book in Dec. for Jan. then quietly cancel & see what happens.

You could go to points.com and exchange the expiring points. Not the best deal but it might get you some more valuable airline miles, etc.
I just did this with LaQuinta. I had 1150 points expiring and turned them into 263 Hawaiian miles. Not the best deal but better than losing them.

When I checked a few days ago, points.com didn't seem to offer exchanges for CP.

    I
It shows my program on Points.com but I don't currently have any CP's so I can't check on that. I've done it in the past but I forget what programs allow transfer from CP.

I didn't think that you'd need points to find out:

    https://www.points.com/choice-privilege-points

says what you can do with the program. In case of Choice there's no Exchange. I don't think it's dependent on your account balance.

I could be wrong but I'm sure i've exchanged CP's with points.com before. Maybe it was through another method or special offer.
Just one more reason not to take part in this program in my personal world.

Or they once participated in the exchange and no longer do,

Do all points have an expiration date? I normally stay at Hilton properties, but have a lot of IHG points. Will they ever expire?

Thrashsoundly, getting 10K FF miles is better than $150 in GCs IMO.
