As a new ex plat on American, how does award travel benefits change? If we end up canceling a trip, do we get the miles back without penalty? Or do we have to rebook within a year or whatever? We're considering a 1st mile saver award to our destination and a economy anytime back... Thanks in advance!

A great (IMO) overview is on AA's site:
    http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/eliteStatus/elite-benefits-chart.jsp

As you can see from the chart, an EXP can, indeed, have miles reinstated free of charge.

Awesome. Thanks so much for the info. Makes the 12 trips from DFW to SFO in Jan even more worth it!

The no ticketing fee (if you are on the PNR) is something I've found handy, particularly since the Citibank AAdvantage reduced award option has to be called in. Also handy when swapping awards last minute from full to saver on the phone or at the airport, coupled with the no fee to reinstate it's a great thing.

The < 21 day fee was huge for me and used to be EXP only but that's changed to all status levels.

Its a shame they give no discount at all to Platinum. We are frequent travelers as well!!

That's not necessarily true. A/F/A the "discount," fly a little more frequently and you won't have to worry about it.

If you book as a PLT and become EXP, you get your EXP benefits.
