EWR Taxi - Credit Card fee

  1. It definitely feels like a rip-off to be charged a "$5.50" credit card fee for the "official" airport taxis at EWR. You'd think that sort of thing would be disallowed by credit card companies.

    Welcome to milepoint !
I have not experienced this with taxis out of EWR. If you have a receipt, do report it -

  3. Thanks :)

Yes - EWR has taxipass stations outside of the taxi queue. It still seems somewhat silly to pay a fee for the use of a credit card.

Pretty sure it is because the cabs themselves don't accept CCs, but the fares are flat-rate by destination so they've basically cut a deal with the CC vendor to let that vendor handle the processing and the cabbie gets the payment. The only thing wrong with that is choosing to take a taxi rather than a black car. ;)

It's disguised as a voucher fee, but it's a CC surcharge, since only CC users have to use a voucher, and the voucher machines only accept CCs.

Even the PA NYNJ website expressly states: "The local taxi commission automatically adds a $5.50 surcharge to all credit card transactions."

Given that all of the major CC issuers ban credit card surcharges, is there anyone we can complain to put a stop to this?

Hmm interesting. However that Visa page also says that surcharges are not allowed to exceed 4% in any event (and may be required to be even lower), and the surcharge on EWR cabs of $5.50 exceeds 4% for all cab fares below $137.50 (such as my cab fare today), which I think is most cab fares, even with Newark price gouging.
