I am an ExPlat and put in for a complimentary upgrade on July 3rd for a flight on July 12th. It hasn't cleared and of course no idea where I am on the list. My question is would switching to a waitlisted eVIP upgrade get me further up the list? Putting in for an eVIP upgrade would change my upgrade request date to today but not sure if AA prioritizes eVIPs over comp upgrades?

No. Using a VIP (or miles) you can confirm domestic upgrade based on revenue A bucket, instead of waiting for complimentary bucket to open up (and thus jump the queue). However, if the flight is A0, the waitlisted VIP upgrade won't help you. You want the earlier request date. (Even when you make it to the airport list, PALL, VIP1 should have same priority as UPG1.)

I think there are some possible edge conditions but as a general rule A will go positive before X and an eVIP will trump complimentary.

Is "eVIP" the same as "SWU?"

As okraglus says the answer is no.
Yes. eVIP is the AA-speak for SWU.

FWIW, there are a cetegory or two that outrank EXP's, but there are very few people in those categories. The most likely one is Concierge Key which only has a few thousand members, all of whom travel A LOT, most of them being on long haul flights.

There are higher priority codes than VIP1/UPG1, such as RF (confirmed F without seat); however, EXP/CK should be in the same priority bucket for upgrades. Unless of course you're breaking news on a very recent change.
