    Hello Everyone.

I have decided for 2012 I am going to make the switch from AA to UA. I just started a new job and everyone here flies UA.

I booked my 1st flight for January and am already enrolled in DEQM with UA, however I read you can purchase EQM's when you book a flight. IS this only on continental? I just booked on United.com and can't seem to figure out how to do it...

    Thanks

Did you have targeted DEQM on United promotion or there is DEQM promotion that I have missed?

It is only available on co.com. If the flight has a CO PNR you can probably pull it up on co.com and buy the EQMs anyways.

That said, unless you want the EQMs to post today there is no point in buying before the end of the year. The price is likely to go down again after the first of January and you aren't going to get much value from just a few EQMs this year unless you're already very close to going over a tier level.

Also, you might consider a status match challenge if you've got status on AA currently.

Do you know if they are planning to have Elite Maximizer option next year?

Just so you know, that promo only applies to a limited set of routes and fares:

CO EliteMaximizer is only available on PMCO segments as far as I'm aware. If I have mixed itineraries, I usually see a smaller number of miles offered than what I would get if it were the entire trip.

Strange. I have an itinerary coming up on CO, UA and Aer Lingus and I can buy up full number of miles. But for $0.175 per mile it does not make sense.

I have an upcoming trip on UA and US, that if I look up on CO, I can buy elite maximizer for 3 cents per mile, and the total number of miles is more than the number I would fly anyways... Very strange

This has not been my experience at all.

    ETA: My current all-LH reservation:

The RDMs should be steady around 3cpm. Adding the EQMs should make it notably more expensive.

ETA: The reservation above is pricing RDMs at 2.5cpm.

I looked at CO maximizer for upcoming trip to SNA....to buy the miles w/o maximer was about $150. When I went to add maximizer, they wanted an additionl $900 to make the 1800 miles eqm eligible . They must be taking advantage of last minute flyers desperate for EQM......

Yup. They did last year, too. Can't say I blame them.

I think the price peaked at 37cpEQM last year.

D'oh. You're right, after I check the box, 6600 RDM goes from $199 to 6600 RDM/EQM for about 1100 something.

sounds about right......it would be more cost effective to hop BIS but there will always be a premium on convenience.

Seth is always right, so I don't know why I choose to question him. It just seemed exceptionally cheap compared to the flight itself. My mixed itineraries this year were nearly all to AMA and cost between $500-$900 for a 4K mile trip. Seeing that I can double my miles for $130 really throws off my mental math when the original trip cost between 12 and 22 cpm.

Interesting that you were quoted 2.5 cpm. Do you think that a different price is offered for international trips?

They started climbing around September, I think. Per the comments in FrequentMiler's blog, buying EQMs is a marginal economic activity. The value is entirely determined by the difference between what you have now and your goal. Close to the end fo the year, cents per EQM doesn't matter quite so much as the total cost to reach the next elite tier. $100 for 1 EQM or $100 for 1,000 EQM will both look like "good" deals depending on whether you had 49,999 or 49,000 to start and your remaining opportunities for actual BIS mileage runs.
